TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Research and Technology Agency (BRIN) stated that nuclear technology could be among the solutions to overcome air pollution, which is by characterizing air particles that are harmful to health.

“We hope this advanced technology will provide clearer insights into the air pollution problem,” BRIN Research Professor Muhayatun Santoso said in a written statement on Tuesday, August 13, 2024.

Air pollution, he explained, stems from both natural sources and human activities. “Natural sources like volcanic activity as Indonesia is in the ring of fire, and fires. Then human activities like transportation, industry, and more,” he outlined.

Indonesia currently operates 17 air pollution monitoring stations across the archipelago, collecting data on various particulate matter. The BRIN will employ nuclear techniques to analyze these particles in detail.

“Due to the extremely small of these particles, sophisticated technology is required. Nuclear techniques, including gamma, X-ray, or proton analysis, can detect these air particles and allow for non-destructive examination of the particles,” said Muhayatun.

The data gathered will inform region-specific policies to combat air pollution, as different areas face unique challenges. The BRIN has collaborated with various technologically advanced countries to conduct research related to air pollution.

“In Asia Pacific, we collaborate with 22 countries. We are also involved in a project with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), where we are allowed to use advanced facilities in Italy, New Zealand, and Australia,” he explained.

Muhayatun further emphasized that air pollution is a global problem that must be addressed together. “We need to collaborate with anyone,” he concluded.
