Connected to 263 islands, Hong Kong has 535 hiking, cycling and mountain biking trails, some of which are close to the city center and easily accessible by public transportation, eliminating the need to travel long distances commonly associated with hiking.

The following are lesser-known natural tourist attractions for hiking and adventuring in Hong Kong, according to the Hong Kong Tourism Board's August 8 press release.

1. Peng Chau

Peng Chau was formerly an industrial hub with more than 100 factories. But today, this small, car-free island offers scenic hiking trails, traditional temples and a glimpse of Hong Kong's slower pace of life. The old Fook Yuen Leather Factory has been revived as an art venue with unique displays and colorful graffiti. These installations change regularly to give visitors a different experience each time.

To reach this island, travelers can take a ferry from Central Pier No. 6, which is accessible from MTR Hong Kong Station. The journey takes approximately 25 minutes on the fast ferry and 40 minutes on the regular ferry. Fares start from HK$9.9 or around Rp20,000.

2. Cheung Chau

Cheung Chau is an island famous for its annual Bun and Ping on Bun festivals. The island also offers scenic landscapes, historic sites, family-friendly hiking trails and delicious cuisine. In addition to hiking, visitors can rent bicycles to explore Cheung Chau's unique blend of natural beauty and cultural legacy. A must-see is the Cheung Po Tsai Cave, where famous 19th century pirate treasures were hidden.

Cheung Chau can be reached by ferry from Central Pier No. 5, accessible from the Hong Kong MTR station. The journey is approximately 25 minutes on the express ferry and 40 minutes on the regular ferry. Fares start from HK$7.40 or about Rp15,000.

3. Red Incense Burner Summit

The Red Incense Burner Summit, commonly referred to as Braemar Hill, is an excellent choice for adventure seekers to enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and Victoria Harbour. This viewpoint is one of the local favorites for watching the sunset and overlooking Hong Kong's mesmerizing night view. The route is relatively easy and short, making it suitable for families.

To get there, take a bus to Upper Braemar Hill Bus Terminus and climb up for five minutes. Hike in the afternoon for the full trail.

4. Mai Po Nature Reserve

A perfect place for birdwatchers, the wetland sanctuary is home to a variety of bird species. Guided tours are also available to inform visitors about the site's ecological significance. Mai Po Nature Reserve can be reached by minibus or bus from Sheung Shui and Yuen Long or by taxi from anywhere in Hong Kong.
