TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States and China continue to fiercely compete for the top position in the 2024 Paris Olympics medal standings. As of Wednesday morning, August 7, the U.S. has extended its lead, surpassing China with a total of 24 gold medals.

On Tuesday, August 6, the U.S. secured gold in men's 1500-meter athletics by Cole Hocker, women's 200-meter athletics, and men's 68 kg freedata-style wrestling, thanks to Cole Hocker, Gabby Thomas, and Amit Elor respectively.

China, despite winning one gold in women's 10-meter platform diving, trails behind with 22 gold medals.

The gap between the top two nations and the rest of the competition is widening, with Australia and France in third and fourth place respectively, holding significantly fewer gold medals each at 14 and 13.

Southeast Asian Performance

Among Southeast Asian countries, the Philippines has emerged as a frontrunner. With two gold medals and one bronze recently clinched by Aira Villegas in the women's flyweight boxing, they currently hold the 22nd position in the overall standings.

Nesthy Petecio, who has secured a spot in the women's featherweight boxing semifinals, is poised to add another medal to the Philippines' tally.

Thailand follows in 55th place with one silver and one bronze medal, while Malaysia sits in 65th position with two bronze medals.

Indonesia, represented by a single bronze from Gregoria Mariska Tunjung in badminton, currently ranks 69th.
