TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Informatics is targeting to start broadcasting disaster early warning systems on digital television. This initiative came as a new solution after the previous SMS blast option to notify the Indonesian citizens of an imminent disaster.

"It will be similar to the early warning system in Japan where it’s broadcast through a television network on standby,” said the Broadband Development Director at the ministry, Marvels Parsaroan Situmorang, at the Communication and Informatics Ministry Office, Central Jakarta, Friday, August 2, 2024.

The ministry will partner with national TV stations such as TVRI and MNC Group to broadcast the early warnings.

"We will collaborate with TVI and the TV stations under MNC Group,” he said.

The disaster early warning system broadcast will commence in September 2024, the ministry plans. “We’re still at the trial stage, but the plan is to start broadcasting between the first and second week of September,” he went on.

Marvels explained that the early warning would only be broadcasted at the locations where the disaster strikes. Hence, he urged Indonesian citizens to enter the correct domicile postal code when registering for their digital television.
