Hamas Chief Ismail Haniyeh Killed in Iran, Hamas Says

TEMPO.CO, Cairo - Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Iran on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, the Palestinian militant group Hamas and Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards said in separate statements.
The Islamist faction mourned the death of Haniyeh, who it said was killed in "a treacherous Zionist raid on his residence in Tehran".
Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the inauguration of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday, July 30.
Hamas confirmed Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Iran. Haniyeh, along with one of his bodyguards, was reportedly killed at his residence in Tehran, according to a statement by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC).
"Early this morning, the residence of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran was struck, resulting in his and one of his body guards' martyrdom. The cause is under investigation and will be announced soon," the IRGC said.
Hezbollah-affiliated news site Al Mayadeen on Wednesday, accused Israel of being behind the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh who was in Tehran, Iran. Israeli officials have yet to comment.
“With condolences for the heroism of the Palestinian nation and the Islamic nation and the fighters of the Resistance Front and the noble nation of Iran, this morning [Wednesday] the residence of Mr. Dr. Ismail Haniyeh, head of the political office of Iran. Islamic Resistance Hamas, was attacked in Tehran, and after this incident, he and one of his bodyguards were martyred,” the IRGC statement read.
Haniyeh is the political leader of Hamas. Haniyeh has spent most of his time in recent years in Qatar. During the Israel-Gaza war, he acted as a negotiator in ceasefire talks and was in contact with Hamas' main ally, Iran.
Haniyeh's three sons and six grandchildren were killed in an Israeli airstrike in April. Even so, Haniyeh refused to release the hostages and step down from power.
