TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government vehemently condemns the Israeli Knesset's initial approval of three bills targeting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a strong statement on social media on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, two days after the Knesset passed the bills that seek to restrict the UNRWA’s operations and even designate it as a "terrorist organization" in their first reading.
“Israel's systemic efforts to dismantle UNRWA is unacceptable and, subsequently, negate the rights of Palestinian refugees to return and to be repatriated to their homes,” the ministry said on social media X on Wednesday.
The first bill passed prohibits UNRWA from carrying out missions, providing services, or carrying out any activities on Israeli territory. It received overwhelming approval with a vote of 58 to 9, according to The Times of Israel.
The second bill jeopardizes the legal immunity and privileges typically granted to UN staff in Israel. This measure was passed by a vote of 63 to 9.
The third bill, which passed with a vote of 50 to 10, designates UNRWA as a "terrorist organization" and compels Israel to sever ties with the agency.
Indonesia Calls for International Support
Despite these initial approvals, the bills must undergo further discussion within the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee before becoming law. This includes two additional readings of the texts.
In response to these, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed its unwavering support for UNRWA, calling on the international community to "stand firm in defending UNRWA's humanitarian mission" that provides critical aid for millions of Palestinian refugees.
“UNRWA must continue to implement its mandate, in accordance with international law and relevant UN resolutions,” the ministry declared.
Formed in 1949 under a UN resolution, UNRWA plays a vital role in assisting and protecting Palestinian refugees across five areas: Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip. The agency's continued operation is crucial for the well-being of millions of Palestinians displaced from their homes.
