Indonesia's Airlangga Meets Russia's Dmitry Medvedev to Strengthen Ties

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto met with Former Russian President and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev in Moscow. Both agreed to strengthen the bilateral relations.

“Russia is one of Indonesia's largest economic partners. We want to resume cooperation between us and hope to develop it in the future to achieve greater mutual understanding,” Airlangga said in a statement in Jakarta on Thursday.

Dmitry Medvedev currently serves as Deputy Chairman of Russia's Security Council. They held talks at Medvedev's official residence in a Moscow suburb on Tuesday, June 11.

“Indonesia welcomes this meeting as part of efforts to improve better relations between Indonesia and Russia in the future,” Airlangga said.

During the meeting, he exchanged views on global and strategic issues, including geopolitical issues and positive dynamics in both countries.

Medvedev welcomed the presence of Indonesia's senior minister directly at his official residence and firmly expressed his opinion on the essential role and position of Indonesia for Russia.

“Indonesia is Russia's main partner and the largest [partner] in the Asia Pacific region,” he said.

He also expressed his pleasure with the meeting and hoped to discuss various cooperation and global issues to ensure global security.

“We are happy to develop this component in our contacts. Let's discuss cooperation in addressing global issues to guarantee security on this planet. This is a great opportunity to build multifaceted relations,” Medvedev concluded.
