TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the adoption of a resolution by the United Nations or UN Security Council supporting plans for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip as a long overdue but crucial step to end Israeli atrocities in Palestine.

The ministry made the statement on its social media X on Tuesday, June 11, or a day after 14 out of 15 members voted in favor of the resolution. Only Russia abstained from the vote.

“The adoption of UNSC Resolution 2735 (2024) on the three-phase ceasefire proposal is a long overdue yet an important step to stop the ongoing atrocities against the people of Palestine and towards achieving an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza,” the ministry tweeted on June 11.

The UN Security Council supported the three-phase ceasefire plan outlined by United States President Joe Biden on May 31, 2024, which he described as an initiative of Israeli initiative.

Hamas welcomed the adoption of the U.S.-drafted resolution and said in a statement that it is ready to cooperate with mediators over implementing the principles of the plan "that are consistent with the demands of our people and resistance."

The first phase of the proposal is an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire with the release of hostages, the return of the bodies of slain hostages, the exchange of hostages for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons, the withdrawal of Israeli troops from populated areas in Gaza, the return of Palestinian civilians to their homes, and the distribution of safe and effective humanitarian assistance on a large scale throughout Gaza.

The second phase includes a permanent cessation of hostilities in exchange for the release of all hostages remaining in Gaza and the full withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza. The third phase will mark the start of a major multi-year reconstruction in Gaza and the return of the bodies of the hostages still in Gaza to their families.

The proposal also states that “if the negotiations take longer than six weeks from phase one, the ceasefire will continue for as long as negotiations continue."

Indonesia urged all parties to "reach an agreement without delay to ensure a lasting ceasefire, immediate relief for the people of Palestine, and to pave the way towards the implementation of the two-state solution."
