TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - During a heatwave, it is crucial to take extra protection for the skin to keep it looking and feeling its best throughout the summer. Skin is more prone to drying out or becoming damaged in sizzling weather. Therefore, it is important to apply proper skincare to guard against harmful UV rays, dehydration, and other heat-related issues.
Here is the list of ten tips to keep your skin safe in a heatwave, as summarized from the Times of India:
1. Use sunscreen regularly
Sunscreen is the first protection against UV rays which can cause sunburn, premature aging, and cancer. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and apply evenly to all exposed skin, including the face, neck, arms, and legs. Reapply every two hours, especially when sweating or swimming.
2. Find shade
Find shade to lessen your exposure to direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun is at its strongest. If you must go outside, take extra protection with an umbrella, light clothes, or a hat with a broad brim.
3. Stay hydrated
Dehydration is a common problem during a heatwave and can affect skin health. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated, or at least eight glasses of water per day, and avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol consumption as they may lead to dehydration.
4. Keep skin cool
To beat the heat and relieve your skin, take cool showers. This is because hot showers can dry out the skin and worsen heat-related problems. For instant skin refreshment, try using a spray bottle filled with water.
5. Use a light moisturizer
Well-hydrated skin is more resilient to the impacts of heat and sunlight. Apply a mild moisturizer that doesn't clog pores and is clear of oil. Look for products that contain glycerin or hyaluronic acid to help attract and retain moisture.
6. Protect your lips with lip balm
Using SPF-containing lip balm is also essential for shielding your lips from the sun. Make sure to reapply throughout the day, especially while outside, as the skin around your lips is particularly vulnerable to sunburn and dryness.
7. Wear light clothes
Wearing light, breathable clothes, such as cotton or linen, helps your skin to breathe and regulate body temperature. Avoid tight clothing as it can trap heat and sweat that may lead to skin irritation and discomfort.
8. Use cooling skin care products
Add cooling skin care products to your regimen to help your skin feel refreshed and soothed. Products with cooling and soothing effects usually contain ingredients like menthol, cucumber, or aloe vera.
9. Avoid excessive skin exfoliation
While exfoliation is a crucial part of any skincare routine, overdoing it can strip the skin of its natural oils and leave it vulnerable to sun damage. Use a mild exfoliant and limit your weekly exfoliation to once or twice.
10. Use sunglasses
Remember to use sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV radiation during a heatwave. Make sure your sunglasses completely filter UVA and UVB rays because prolonged sun exposure raises the risk of cataracts and other eye diseases.
