TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Defense and President-elect Prabowo Subianto and US Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III discussed the modernization of the primary weaponry defense system on the sidelines of the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue 2024 in Singapore on Saturday, June 1, 2024.

During the meeting, Prabowo extended his appreciation to the US for supporting the modernization of equipment utilized by the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI).

"This (modernization) is essential to meet the standard strength of the TNI," he noted in a statement received from the Defense Ministry in Jakarta on Sunday, June 2, 2024.

2. Maldives Bans Entry of Israeli Passport Holders in Solidarity with Palestine

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Maldives banned Israeli citizens from entering its territory on Sunday, June 2, amid growing public anger over Israel's genocide in Gaza. The Indian Ocean archipelago is known for its white sand beaches and luxury resorts.

“President Mohamed Muizzu has resolved to impose a ban on Israeli passports,” a government spokesman said in a statement. However, he did not provide details as to when the ban would take effect.

Muizzu also announced a national fundraising campaign dubbed “Maldivians in Solidarity with Palestine”. Nearly 11,000 Israelis visited the Muslim-majority country last year, or 0.6 percent of total tourist visits.

3. Labor Party to Challenge Tapera Law in Constitutional Court

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President of the Labor Party, Said Iqbal, has declared that his party intends to contest Law No. 4 of 2016 on the public housing savings (Tapera) to the Constitutional Court. This law mandates the deduction of 3 percent of workers' salaries per month, commencing in May 2027.

“We will soon file a petition for a judicial review of the Tapera Law with the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court,” he said in a written statement on Sunday, June 2, 2024.

The party also planned to stage a demonstration in front of the State Palace on June 6. Said believed that Tapera burdens workers' living costs and is susceptible to corrupt practices.
