TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government has just approved three new Special Economic Zones or SEZs. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said the zones are designated for the education, health, and technology sectors.

The three SEZs are located in Bumi Serpong Damai or BSD, Tangerang; Batam, Riau Islands; and Morowali, Central Sulawesi.

"The approved SEZs are designated for the health, education, and technology sectors, not property," said Airlangga at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs Office on Wednesday, May 29, 2024.

The government is collaborating with Apolo Hospital from India for the health and tourism special economic zone in Batam. The location is in Tanjung Sauh, Batam with an area of 840.67 hectares. The new SEZ was provided under Government Regulation No. 24 of 2024, signed by President Joko Widodo or Jokowi on May 28, 2024.

Meanwhile, the Morowali special economic zone will focus on nickel downstream involving PT Vale Indonesia. Airlangga said that all SEZs use purely private funding schemes.

Special Economic Zones or SEZs are the government's strategic policy as a center for developing economic growth, equalizing the national economy which supports industrialization, and increasing labor absorption.

This area with various facilities and conveniences is presented to domestic and foreign investors. Airlangga said incentives are provided, such as free import fees for the health sector.
