TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Police’s Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim) arrested Sofyan, a legislative candidate for the Aceh Tamiang Regency People's Representative Council from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS). Sofyan was suspected of distributing about 70 kilograms of crystal meth (sabu) to fund his campaign in the 2024 Legislative Election.

The Head of Narcotics Crime at Bareskrim, Brigadier General Mukti Juharsa, explained that Sofyan was a fugitive from a case uncovered in South Lampung on March 11, 2024. The arrest was a joint operation by Bareskrim and Lampung Regional Police.

Mukti said the police brought Sofyan from Aceh to Bareskrim office in South Jakarta on Monday, May 27, 2024. He will undergo an intensive probing regarding suspected drug crimes. "This afternoon (the suspect) was taken to Bareskrim," said Mukti in a written statement on Monday.

Sofyan was arrested by investigators from Sub-Directorate Team 4 of Bareskrim in collaboration with the Aceh Tamiang Police. Police mapped the suspect's hiding place after being on the run for three weeks.

The police charged Sofyan with Article 114 Paragraph (2) in conjunction with Article 132 Paragraph (1) subsidiary Article 112 paragraph (2) of Narcotics Law Number 35 of 2009.
