TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi stated that the public's expectations of the government are currently high, and as such, development initiatives must directly benefit the community.
Speaking at the national coordination meeting on internal government supervision held by the Financial and Development Supervisory Agency at the Jakarta State Palace on Wednesday, May 22, the President underscored the imperative for the BPKP to prioritize the societal advantages of development.
“We know that the challenges will be even more difficult. In the future, government programs and spending will be bigger. This will definitely increase. And also, the demands of society will be higher. Something can easily go viral. There will be more and more demands from the people,” the state head said.
He stressed that the BPKP acts as a sign to spotlight irregularities in development and urged the agency to explore innovative technologies.
Muhammad Yusuf Ateh, the chairman of the BPKP, emphasized in his speech the agency’s commitment to oversee the completion of the country’s medium-term programs for sustainable development.
The BPKP noted that from 2020 to the first quarter of 2024, the agency’s supervision has resulted in saving state finances worth Rp78.68 trillion, saving state spending of Rp192.93 trillion, and optimizing state revenues up to Rp38.75 trillion. “We are not only monitoring financial activities but also development effectiveness,” said Yusuf.
