TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Starlink, the satellite constellation developed by SpaceX, has set to operate in Indonesia. The Indonesian government expects Elon Musk's American aerospace company will deliver internet services to the country's remote areas.

Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan announced on Tuesday, May 14, that President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and Elon Musk will officially launch Starlink on the sidelines of the 10th World Water Forum in Nusa Dua, Bali.

Here's what you need to know about the advantages and disadvantages of Starlink:

Advantages

Indonesia is eagerly anticipating the arrival of Starlink due to the following benefits:

1. Extensive coverage

Starlink has broad reach as it uses satellites to provide networks across even the most remote islands.

2. High speed

Starlink offers high network speed by leveraging low-Earth orbit satellites. According to its official page, download speeds range from 25 to 220 Mbps, with the majority of users experiencing speeds exceeding 100 Mbps.

3. High durability and stability

Another advantage of Starlink is its durability and stable service, owing to its use of satellites in outer space, resulting in more stable performance compared to other providers.

Disadvantages

Despite its substantial advantages, Starlink does have some drawbacks as follows:

1. Expensive prices

Given its high-speed internet services and a network of satellites orbiting in space, it is not surprising that Starlink comes with a hefty price tag. Subscription fees and equipment are quite steep for some

2. Capacity constraints

While it can reach remote areas, Starlink's satellite capacity is quite limited. The speed and signal quality will degrade if numerous users access the network simultaneously.

3. Environmental issues

As more and more satellites are launched into space, there are concerns about space pollution and even the potential for collisions with space debris. This environmental impact is a source of concern for some, as the simultaneous launch of numerous satellites will undoubtedly have consequences.
