TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bank Indonesia (BI) Deputy Governor Filianingsih Hendarta confirmed that the fintech giant Ant Group has not yet filed an application to operate its Alipay payment system in Indonesia.

“There is no formal application from Alipay to Bank Indonesia as a payment system service provider so far,” Filianingsih said at a press conference in Jakarta, on Wednesday, April 24.

Previously, Minister of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo) Budi Arie Setiadi said that the China-based Ant Group had shown interest in collaborating to accelerate Indonesia’s digital economy. “Especially through digital payments and fintech in Indonesia,” Budi said at the Kominfo Ministry office in Central Jakarta on Friday, April 19.

Filianingsih explained that obtaining an operating license is mandatory to offer services in the country. Applicants or representatives of the financial arm of Alibaba, founded by Jack Ma, could approach the BI office to request a preliminary consultation on the requirements.

“Usually, applicants come to Bank Indonesia to request a pre-consultative meeting and discuss with Bank Indonesia what the requirements are,” she said.

Bank Indonesia in tandem with the Financial Services Authority (OJK) always ensures that every payment service provider (PJP) meets aspects of information system security standards, including offering safe and reliable payment services.
