TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early warning of extreme weather conditions expected to persist in most regions of Indonesia for the next week. This is due to the forecast of the equatorial Rossby wave, which will be active in Aceh, parts of Java, Bali, and throughout Nusa Tenggara and could potentially intensify the precipitation.

“Kelvin wave activity is also active. These factors support the potential for cloud growth in the regions,” read the agency’s statement on Tuesday, April 23.

According to the BMKG data, the low-pressure area in the Indian Ocean southwest of Bengkulu establishes a convergence area extending from West Sumatra to the west coast of Bengkulu and a confluence area on the west coast of Aceh to West Bengkulu.

Furthermore, the agency has detected cyclonic circulation in the Arafuru Sea and Flores Sea which formed a convergence area extending from Papua Mountains to South Papua; from Central Sulawesi to South Sulawesi; from the Banda Sea to Southeast Sulawesi; on the west coast of Aceh; from the south coast of West Java to the south of Banten; from North Kalimantan to Central Kalimantan; and in the North Pacific Ocean of Southwest Papua. All these conditions also trigger the growth of rain clouds.

Therefore, the BMKG expected moderate to heavy rains in Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, Bengkulu, Jambi, South Sumatra, Bangka Belitung Islands, Lampung, as well as in Java, starting from Banten, West Java, Jakarta, Central Java, Yogyakarta, to East Java.

Similarly, there is a likelihood of moderate to heavy rainfall in Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, North Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, the entire region of Sulawesi, North Maluku, Maluku, West Papua, and Papua.

“The public is advised to remain alert and cautious due to the potential for extreme weather over the next week,” the alert reads.

The extreme weather in question includes tornadoes, thunderstorms, hail, and others. The BMKG also warned about flooding, landslides, strong winds, fallen trees, and slippery roads in these areas.
