TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Nations Security Council's (UNSC) Committee on Admission of New Members failed to reach an agreement regarding Palestine's application for full membership in the United Nations.

"There was no consensus reached regarding the recommendation for (Palestine's) membership," said the representative of Malta, currently leading the UNSC, on Thursday, April 12, 2024.

Following the failure to reach a consensus, Malta will prepare a report on the issue for UN members.

However, Malta's Ambassador to the UN, Vanessa Frazier, explained that there were no issues regarding Palestine's fulfillment of the requirements for full membership in the UN.

This suggests that two-thirds of the committee members supported Palestine's membership application.

In 2011, Palestine applied for full membership in the UN but failed to garner the necessary support from UNSC members.

However, Palestine's Representative to the UN Riyad Mansour, announced on April 2 that he had sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres requesting a reconsideration of their membership application.

On April 3, Guterres wrote a letter to the UNSC requesting a reconsideration of Palestine's application.

The process of admitting new members to the UN has begun in the Security Council. After deliberation, the Security Council will refer the issue to the Committee on Admission of New Members.

If the committee responds positively, the UN Security Council must vote, with none of its permanent members exercising their veto power and at least nine out of 15 members voting "in favor" of a positive outcome.

If the council approves, the matter is referred to the UN General Assembly. Membership approval in the 193-member UN General Assembly requires a two-thirds majority vote.

Since 1974, Palestine has been participating at the UN as an observer.
