TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on Monday, March 25, welcoming the adoption of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 2728 calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

The resolution was adopted as Israel's attack on Gaza entered its sixth month since October 7, 2023. The bombardment has killed at least 32,333 people and injured more than 74,694 others.

“Indonesia welcomes the adoption of UNSC Resolution 2728 (2024) demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza,” wrote the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on its X (formerly Twitter) social media account on Tuesday, March 26.

The Ministry represents Indonesia in calling for the immediate implementation of the legally binding resolution by all parties.

Unlike UN General Assembly resolutions, all UN Security Council resolutions are legally binding following the legal advice of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the Namibia issue in 1971.

“This is the time to ensure delivery of humanitarian assistance at the scale required and protect civilians in Gaza,” the ministry added.

The 15-member Security Council adopted a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas after the United States abstained from voting.

The remaining 14 council members supported the resolution, which also called for the immediate and unconditional release of all Hamas hostages. The vote was followed by applause.

“This resolution must be implemented. Failure would be unforgivable,” U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres wrote on social media.
