TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Acting Governor of Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono extended his apology to Jakarta residents for the 24-hour flooding that hit several areas of the city on Sunday, March 24.

“Please understand [the situation], and I apologize that West Jakarta was flooded for more than 24 hours yesterday,” Heru said when met at the Cengkareng Sports Hall (GOR) in West Jakarta, Monday, March 25.

Heavy rains drenched the capital and its surroundings from last Sunday to Monday. The Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) reported that Jalan Raya Bogor KM 19 (HEK) in Kramat Jati, East Jakarta was inundated with 30 centimeters of floodwater as of 7:00 a.m. on Monday.

Heru blamed the flooding on the intensity of rain, which reached 200 millimeters per day, categorizing it as medium rain. He explained that with a rain intensity of 180 millimeters, Jakarta was already overwhelmed in dealing with the flooding. "So please understand," he said.

Additionally, he claimed that Jakarta received massive water flow from Bogor, which caused flooding in the HEK. However, Heru claimed that the flooding had now receded.

“It has receded as of 07:15 today,” said Heru Budi.

The Jakarta BPBD also reported that the river embankment in the Kramat Jati area, East Jakarta burst on Sunday, March 24, due to high water discharge. “It happened at around 04:45 WIB due to high water discharge in the Ciliwung River,” the Jakarta BPBD spokesman, Michael Sitanggang, said as quoted from Antara in Jakarta on Monday, March 25.
