TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The University of North Sumatra (USU) collaborated with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) to provide technical guidance on essay writing for students, to help them prepare for national competitions.

The guidance, provided through the Indonesian Literature Study Program, is a positive step because it would encourage students to excel at the national level, dean of the Humanities Faculty (FIB) of USU, T. Thyrhaya Zein, said in Medan on Saturday.

In this way, the target of the Main Performance Indicator (IKU) 2 in the study program will continue to increase.

If the IKU 2 of the study program increases, the IKU of the faculty would also climb and contribute to enhancing the IKU 2 of USU.

“Therefore, students who take part in the technical guidance are expected to be able to absorb well what is conveyed by the resource person,” Zein said.

“…because essay writing competitions are not just about writing, but (participants) also have to understand how the template is, the rules and procedures for preparing it, and what not less important is what ideas you want to convey,” she added.

She also emphasized that the FIB of USU is committed to increasing student achievements in national competitions, especially those organized by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology.

Therefore, the faculty will regularly disseminate information regarding national-level competitions so that students can participate in them.

“What the Indonesian Literature Study Program is doing is part of an effort to increase the number of achievements of our students,” Zein said.

“Thank you to the Indonesian Literature Study Program for holding this event and hopefully, the results will be in line with our shared hopes,” she added.

Chair of the Indonesian Literature Study Program at USU, Dwi Widayati, said that the activity, which was attended by hundreds of students, was intended to encourage and prepare students to take part in essay competitions at the national level.

"Essays combine fact and opinion, and express the author's ideas, arguments, and emotions in a personal and creative way," Widayati said.

With the technical guidance, students are expected to listen and practice expressing ideas creatively in preparation for national competitions.

"We hope that students who participate in the essay writing guidance this time will be more enthusiastic in taking part in the competitions that are always held in USU programs, the Ministry of Education and Culture, or other agencies," she said.

Meanwhile, Suyadi from BRIN’s Research Center for Language, Literature, and Community, who also presented materials, explained the technicalities of good and correct essay writing.

The main point he shared was how students must master the desired topic of the essay.

"Factual research and data collection are important to strengthen arguments," he said.
