TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - When traveling to Indonesia, foreign tourists have several things to consider. One of them is how you dress.

There are several ways of dressing that foreign tourists should avoid in Indonesia, such as dressing in revealing clothes or ignoring local customs.

This article will discuss tips on what to wear for foreign tourists when visiting Indonesia.

Ways to Dress Properly as a Foreign Tourist in Indonesia

1. Avoid too revealing clothes

Indonesia is a country rich in religious values and a conservative culture. Therefore, you should avoid wearing revealing or skimpy clothing that may be considered inappropriate by the local community.

Avoid tank tops, singlets, or clothes that are too short, especially when visiting places of worship or rural areas.

2. Be aware of the local cultural context

Every region in Indonesia has different cultures and customs. Before visiting a place, it is important to understand the local cultural context and choose appropriate clothing.

For example, when visiting a traditional village or religious event, it is best to wear modest clothes and respect local traditions.

In addition, knowledge of the local culture can also help build better relationships with locals, enhancing the travel experience, and an appreciation for the diversity of cultures around the world.

3. Respecting religious traditions

Indonesia is a Muslim-majority country but also houses a variety of other religious practices such as Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, and others.

When visiting places of worship, such as mosques, churches, temples, or shrines, be sure to respect religious traditions by wearing clothes that adhere to specific religious customs.

4. Dress for the place you're visiting

Before going to a place, it is important to make sure that the clothes worn are in accordance with the rules of the place you intend to visit.

This includes choosing clothes that are not too revealing or flashy, especially when visiting places that are considered holy or places of worship. On the other hand, you may dress however you please when going to the beach.

5. Paying attention to the local environment

Indonesia has a wide range of climates, from tropical to chilly mountainous terrains. Be sure to pay attention to the local weather and climate when choosing what to wear. In addition, avoid wearing clothes that are too flashy or disruptive to local life, especially in rural areas.

6. Dress for the weather

Keep in mind that clothing has the main function of protecting the body. Foreign tourists need to ensure that the clothes used are appropriate for the time and weather conditions of the destination.

For example, when traveling to Mount Bromo in the early hours, bring a thick jacket and wear clothes that could warm up the body.
