TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government aims for Jakarta to become an economic center in the future, not unlike several well-known world-class cities, according to Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian today, March 13.

"We want Jakarta to become one of the main centers in the economy, services, banking, and other sectors, similar to US’ New York or Australia’s Sydney and Melbourne," Tito said during the Working Meeting of the Legislation Body of the House of Representatives (DPR), as quoted from Antara, Wednesday, March 13, 2024.

For Jakarta to become a world-class city or global city, according to Tito, a strong commitment between the DPR, DPD, and local government is required.

"[Jakarta as a city] which not only competes at the Southeast Asian level but is also on par with other developed cities in the world," said Tito.

As a government representative, Tito explained in the meeting that the government approved Jakarta’s special status Bill (DKJ Bill) discussion as an implication of the IKN Law Number 3 of 2022.

The government, said Tito, agreed to further discuss the DKJ Bill initiative, “while also paying attention to relevant regulations”.

Meanwhile, The Chairman of the DPR Legislative Body Supratman Andi Agtas believes that Jakarta needs to be designed as a megapolitan city at the national, regional, and global levels. "With the formation of an agglomeration region as a support for integrated buffer areas, namely Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi and Cianjur," said Supratman.
