TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - There are many countries that impose mandatory military service on their citizens. Military conscription is usually implemented for several reasons such as the result of state fragmentation and division, state crisis and resilience, or state fragmentation and restructuring.

According to the World Population Review, at least 86 countries have mandatory military service for their citizens. Here are five of them:

1. South Korea

Military conscription has been included in the South Korean constitution for a long time, but it was only in 1957 that it became mandatory.

2. Thailand

3. Russia

The military conscription system in Russia has been around for a long time, in fact it was introduced since the Russian Empire, which was initiated by Dmitry Milyutin in 1874. Military service is mandatory for male Russian citizens from 12 months to 18 months, with an age limit of 27 years.

4. Singapore

Reporting from Decode UAI, Singapore requires men from the age of 18 to carry out mandatory military service for 22 to 24 months. Most of those who undertake military training are placed in the Army forces.

5. North Korea

Like South Korea, North Korea also implements a mandatory military service system. In fact, this country implements the longest mandatory military service in the world. Not only men, women are also required to participate in military training for 7 years for women and 10 years for men.
