TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi will head the Indonesian delegates at the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit in Melbourne. He departed from Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base on Monday, March 4, 2024.

The ASEAN-Australia Special Summit will commence from March 4 to 6, 2024. The Southeast Asia bloc and Australia will also celebrate their 50 years of relations.

Jokowi said he would use this opportunity to boost the integrated economy, energy transition, and digital transformation, as well as “advancing collaborative paradigm and enforcement of international law consistently, including on the issue of Palestine,” Jokowi said before embarking to Australia.

Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said to reporters on Thursday, February 29 that the summit will consist of two sessions, one of which is called a ‘retreat’ and specifically discuss geopolitical issues.

Another session will discuss priority collaborations between Australia and ASEAN, including “energy transition, from the perspective of Indonesia’s interest”, according to Retno last Tuesday.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said the partnership between Australia and ASEAN has been upgraded into a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, strengthened by both countries’ geographical proximity.

“Our nations and peoples are enriched as we trade together,” Penny Wong said during the Maritime Corporate Forum in Melbourne on Monday, March 4, 2024.
