PT Timah Tin Mining Corruption Case Causes Rp271.06 trillion of State Loss, Environmental Expert Says

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Environmental Expert at the Faculty of Forestry at IPB University Bambang Hero Saharjo explained the total state loss caused by environmental damage in the PT Timah corruption case. According to him, after a verification process on the ground and a satellite imaging observation, the state loss amounted to Rp271.06 trillion.
“The total state loss caused by the environmental damage at the forest and nonforest areas combined is Rp271,069,688,018,700,” he said on Monday, referring to the corruption case in the trading of tin commodities under the Mining Business License (IUP) of PT Timah from 2015 to 2022.
Bambang said that mining expansion occurred from 2016 to 2022, where PT Timah conducted its activities in the forest and nonforest areas. Out of the seven regencies in Bangka Belitung Province, there was a total of 349,653.574 hectares of IUP on land. The total area of mine excavations in the seven regencies was 170,363.064 hectares. For East Belitung Regency, the mine excavation area reached 43,175.372 hectares, even though the IUP area only amounted to 37,535,452 hectares.
Bambang said that of the total areas of mine excavation, around 75,345.751 hectares were in forest areas and 95,017,313 hectares were nonforest areas.
In the forest area, Bambang explained, 13,875.295 hectares were in protected forests; 59,847.252 hectares in permanent production forest; 77,830 hectares in convertible production forest; 1,238.917 hectares in grand forest parks, and 306,456 hectares in national parks.
Only 88,900.462 hectares of the mine excavation had IUPs while the rest 81,462.602 hectares did not. Bambang said the total area of land and sea mining areas reached 915,854.625 hectares. This number consisted of 349,653.574 hectares of land IUP area and 566,201.08 hectares of sea IUP area.
According to Bambang, the total environmental loss due to tin mining in forest areas reached Rp157.83 trillion; environmental economic loss reached Rp60.27 billion; and the environmental restoration costs up to Rp5.26 billion.
Environmental losses due to tin mining in nonforest areas include environmental loss of Rp25.87 trillion; environmental economic loss of Rp15.2 trillion and environmental restoration costs of Rp6.62 billion.
