TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono informed on Monday that his ministry has invited Turkey to invest in Indonesia's tuna cultivation sector.

"I went to Izmir, Turkey, to see tuna farming and cultivation. Indonesia's tuna catch has reached 334,000 tons per year, but they cannot be cultivated yet, so we have invited Turkey to invest in Indonesia," he said.

According to the minister, Indonesia has a rich variety of tuna species, including bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna, and bigeye tuna, which can be cultivated through the tuna baby enlargement method, as is being done in Turkey.

The capture of baby tuna, he said, is a form of maintaining the sustainability and population of the marine and fisheries sector.

However, Indonesia is still lagging behind countries in Europe, the United States, Canada, and Australia in terms of fisheries cultivation, he noted.

To address this, the government will continue to learn to develop fisheries and marine cultivation in the country, the minister informed.

Based on the existing potential, the value of the fish market could reach US$730 million by 2030. Trenggono expressed the hope that in the next five years, Indonesia can grow stronger in fisheries cultivation and master five types of commodities, namely shrimp, seaweed, tilapia, lobster, and crab.

At the 2024 Indonesia Marine and Fisheries Business Forum, Trenggono revealed that investment opportunities in the marine and fisheries sector are quite large, ranging from upstream, downstream, marketing, to the distribution of fishery products.

For instance, there is a large opportunity to invest in the seaweed processing industry in Wakatobi, Southeast Sulawesi, an integrated shrimp processing industry in Kebumen and Cilacap, Central Java, and seaweed cultivation in Takalar, South Sulawesi.
