TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) and the United States Forestry Service (USFS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on January 23 to support Indonesia’s Forest and Land Use (FOLU) Net Sink 2030 plan.

The pact, inked by USFS Head Randy Moore and KLHK Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar in Jakarta, was also a vital step in bolstering global environmental sustainability and climate resilience.

The United States Embassy in Jakarta said in a statement that the MOU would also signify the commitment of the two countries to cooperate in sustainable forest management and governance, forest carbon, forest and land fire control, as well as education and training. This is in line with the urgent global need to combat climate change and environmental degradation, which recognizes the crucial role of forests in carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation.

“The United States Forest Service looks forward to expanding our collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry to help achieve Indonesia’s ambitious goals for 2030, in support of global efforts to combat climate change,” Moore said.

Under the agreement, the USFS would provide technical expertise and support to Indonesia in these areas. This was expected to greatly enhance Indonesia's capacity to sustainably manage its forest resources and further the goals of FOLU Net Sink 2030.

The two countries would also exchange knowledge and best practices on sustainable forest management in an effort to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, as well as forest and land fire management.

The agreement also includes a major focus on training and education. Capacity-building programs will be established to empower stakeholders and local people in order to ensure that the benefits of sustainable forest management are widely shared and inclusive. The MOU should also open the door for Indonesia to implement stronger and more efficient forest management practices that support global efforts to mitigate climate change and improve biodiversity conservation.
