TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The head of the cultural and tourism cooperation division of the ASEAN-Korea Centre Alex Macatuno announced on Wednesday that in the first assembly of 2024, Indonesia was elected to lead the Tourism and Culture Working Group of the ASEAN-Korea Centre in Seoul.

Indonesia was chosen among 11 ASEAN representatives, with The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Seoul appointed as the Chair, while the Embassy of the Lao People's Democratic Republic in Seoul was appointed as the deputy chair.

"Indonesia's leadership in the Tourism and Culture Working Group of the ASEAN-Korea Centre will function as a conduit to voice the interests related to tourism and culture of ASEAN Committee member countries in Seoul to the ASEAN Korea Centre (AKC), while also aiming to explore broader cultural and tourism-based cooperation," said Joannes Ekaprasetya Tandjung, the Coordinator of the Creative and Digital Economy Affairs at the Indonesian Embassy in Seoul.

In 2024, Indonesia will lead the Tourism and Culture Working Group of the ASEAN-Korea Centre in directing the tourism and cultural cooperation between ASEAN member countries and South Korea throughout the year.

Some activities that will be headed by Indonesia in 2024 include tourism and cultural exchange promotion such as the ASEAN-Korea Culture and Tourism Integrated Experience and the ASEAN-Korea Quality Tourism Development Towards Sustainability.

Indonesia's leadership is necessary to facilitate ASEAN member countries's interest in planning and realizing various programs relating to culture and tourism exchange. Indonesia is also responsible for bridging the communication between ASEAN member representatives in Seoul with AKC-related organizations.

Indonesia's leadership in the Tourism and Culture Working Group of the AKC reflects recognition of Indonesia's crucial role in strengthening cooperation between ASEAN countries and South Korea in the tourism and culture sector.

Throughout 2022-2023, The Indonesian Embassy in Seoul has been active in the promotion of Indonesian tourism, culture, and the creative economy, through various activities such as the Colourful North Sulawesi event and Indonesia Night in Daegu. ASEAN ambassadors and AKC leaders often participate in these activities.

Through this leadership, it is expected to have a positive impact in supporting economic growth, sustainable development, and strengthening relations between ASEAN and South Korea in the tourism and culture sector.
