TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency or BMKG predicted the rainfall volume in 2024 is normal. However, climate change potential will affect several parts of Indonesia, causing drought.

The Head of BMKG Dwikorita Karnawati said that the drought-risked regions in Indonesia include Lampung, parts of Java, parts of Bali, parts of NTB and NTT, as well as southern Papua.

“The rainfall volume in 2024 in general is normal. However, low rainfall volume in parts of Indonesia cause the potential of drought,” she said in a statement on Friday.

Despite the risk of drought, Dwikorita said that other parts of Indonesia will face an increase in yearly rainfall volume.

Meanwhile, the Deputy of Climatology Station at BMKG Ardhasena Sopaheluwakan urged both the government and citizens of Indonesia to anticipate the weather potential in 2024, including by improving the optimization of water resource infrastructure in urban or vulnerable regions.

A dry season will occur, Ardhasena said, but it will be bearable compared to last year.

“Stay vigilant of wildfires potential, especially during the first period of dry season in February 2024 for coastal areas of eastern Sumatra, and in May 2024 for regions at risk of wildfires,” Ardhasena concluded.
