TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The tremors of the cold lava flood in Mount Semeru occurred for about 1.5 hours due to the downpour over the peak of the volcano which has an altitude of 3,676 meters above sea level in Lumajang Regency, East Java, on Monday, Dec. 25.

The officer of the Semeru Volcano Observation Post at Mount Sawur, Ghufron Alwi, said in a report on Monday that observations of the seismic activity of Mount Semeru on Dec. 25 from 12:00 to 06:00 p.m. showed a flood tremor earthquake.

The activity of the highest mountain on Java Island showed fifteen eruption earthquakes with 11 to 22 mm amplitude for 68 to 145 seconds, two gusts with 8 mm amplitude for 47 to 53 seconds, as well as two distant tectonic earthquakes with 10 to 28 mm amplitude for 49 to 97 seconds.

“For visual observation, the volcano is clearly visible until it is covered by fog. Crater smoke is not observed. The weather is sunny to rainy, weak to moderate winds to the north and northeast,” Ghufron said.

Meanwhile, the Head of Prevention, Preparedness, and Logistics of Lumajang Disaster Management Agency or BPBD Wawan Hadi Siswoyo urges residents and sand miners to be vigilant when of Semeru cold lava flood.

"We keep socializing and urging residents to stay vigilant of rain that falls on Semeru Peak. Miners are recommended to avoid Semeru's watershed," he said.

The status of Mount Semeru is at level III or alert, prohibiting people from doing any activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan as far as 13 kilometers from Semeru's peak.

Beyond that distance, people should not carry out activities at 500 meters distance from the edge of the river along Besuk Kobokan because it has the potential to be hit by the expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to a distance of 17 kilometers from the peak.

“People should also not do activities within a radius of 5 kilometers from the crater/peak of Mount Semeru because it is prone to the danger of incandescent rock ejection,” he concluded.
