TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Head of Epidemiologist Surveillance and Immunization Division of the Jakarta Health Office Ngabila Salma confirmed the death of one of the isolated monkeypox or mpox patients at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) in Central Jakarta on Thursday, Nov. 23.

"Yes, it was the same person that [Health Ministry] recorded with severe symptoms [of mpox] and was in a critical condition," Salma told Tempo today.

The death of the mpox patient was also confirmed by the Health Ministry. The Director General of Disease Prevention and Control, Maxi Rein Rondonuwu stated that the patient was confirmed positive for mpox and had a history of being HIV-positive.

Maxi also explained that the death of this patient was not due to mpox. "It was not because of mpox. The patient died due to ileus obstruction or intestinal blockage and was HIV-positive with a very low viral load," Maxi said as quoted by Antara.

The DG also explained that the patient had never received antiretroviral drugs (ARV). Meanwhile, the patient's mpox symptom was only skin lesions.

The most recent data recorded that there are currently 43 cases of mpox positive in Jakarta, including the one recovered patient in August 2022.
