TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Palestinian independence is still a global issue that continues to be the focus of international attention. Even though many countries recognize Palestinian independence, there are also countries that do not recognize Palestine as a state up until now.

Therefore, Palestine continues to make efforts to gain recognition as a state that is officially recognized by all countries in the world.

Palestine is actually recognized as a de jure (according to law) sovereign state in the Middle East region. But Palestine does not have control over most of its land because the majority of the territory is controlled by Israel.

Currently, Palestine only occupies key areas, including the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

Countries That Do Not Recognize Palestine

According to data from the World Population Review, to date there are 139 countries that have officially given bilateral recognition to the State of Palestine.

This recognition was given after the Palestinian National Council declared its independence on November 15, 1988 in Algeria. On the other hand, as many as 55 countries do not recognize Palestine as a state.

Several major countries that are recorded as not recognizing Palestine as a country are the United States (US), France and the United Kingdom (UK). These three countries stated they would not recognize a Palestinian state until the conflict with Israel was resolved peacefully.

The United States itself does not recognize Palestinian independence because the country has close ties with Israel. America is known to have been a strong supporter of Israel since the country was founded in 1948. This support has continued throughout the decades of conflict between Palestine and Israel.

Washington has even provided significant military and economic assistance to Israel over the years. Many US policymakers view Israel as a key ally in the Middle East. So, what is the list of countries that do not recognize Palestinian independence?
