TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 6.7-magnitude earthquake that struck the southern Philippines region of Mindanao on Friday, November 17, 2023, at 3:14 p.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB) was felt as far away as the Sangihe Islands, North Sulawesi.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the quake’s magnitude was later updated to 6.8. The epicenter of the quake was located in the sea, approximately 228 kilometers northwest of Tahuna, Sangihe, and at a depth of 63 kilometers.

Daryono, the agency’s head of the quake and tsunami center, said in Jakarta that the tremor was felt quite strongly in Naha with an intensity of V MMI (Modified Mercally Intensity), in Ondong, Talaud Islands Regency with an intensity of III-IV MMI, and in North Minahasa with an intensity of III MMI.

The agency, however, confirmed that the powerful quake had no potential to generate a tsunami.

“As of Friday, Nov. 17 at 3:32 p.m. WIB, BMKG’s monitoring results have not shown any aftershocks,” Daryono added.

While there were no immediate reports of casualties, people were asked to remain calm and be aware of the damage caused by the earthquake.
