TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed the Minutes of Discussion (MoD) of appraisal mission for the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) East-West Line Phase 1 Project.

The signing was carried out at the Ministry of Transportation Building, here on Saturday (November 11), by the ministry's Director General of Railways Risal Wasal, and the Director of Bilateral Funding Kurniawan Ariadi at the National Development Planning Ministry (Bappenas).

Moreover, the MoD was also signed by Jakarta Provincial Secretary Joko Agus Setiono, MRT Jakarta President Director Tuhiyat, and Chief of JICA Representative Office in Indonesia Yasui Takehiro.

The signing was witnessed by Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi, Acting Governor of Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono, and Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Japan in Indonesia Nagai Katsuro.

"I hope that the East-West Line of the MRT project can run well and can be completed on time so that the community can immediately enjoy it," Sumadi said in an official statement received here on Sunday.

He explained that the MRT construction in Jakarta is in accordance with the National Railway Master Plan to expand the public transportation network and its users.

"We must consistently carry out various rail-based public transportation developments such as MRT, Light Rapid Transit (LRT), and Commuter Line (KRL)," he said.

Furthermore, he praised Japan's active participation in helping build mass transportation infrastructure in Indonesia.

"In addition to the soft loan, other creative funding schemes are needed to fulfill other needs. I hope that in the future there will be more cooperation between the governments of Indonesia and Japan in the railway sector," he added.

The MRT East-West Line will have a length of 84.1 kilometers stretching from Balaraja, Tangerang, to Cikarang, Bekasi.
