TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Video Assistant Referee (VAR) and goal-line technology will be used at the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Indonesia. Indra Yudhistira, the CEO of Visual Indomedia Produksi (VIP) which is part of the official broadcaster EMTEK, said FIFA would send a team to operate the technology.
“Some officials will be from FIFA, some will be local. So the VAR team will work in synergy with our production team. The VAR team from FIFA will bring their equipment and then place it next to our control room,” Indra said after the press conference on the official broadcaster of the upcoming youth tournament at the SCTV Tower, on Tuesday, October 3, 2023.
Indra said the four appointed stadiums will have dedicated VAR rooms. He said it was a good thing that FIFA involved local teams in the operation of VAR, as it often brought its own team without working with local organizers.
According to him, the use of VAR will also have a positive impact on the four Indonesian stadiums as it will raise their standards to the international level. He also said that this would be a momentum for his side to study the technology.
In addition to VAR, Indra said goal-line technology would also be used. “But it will be different from what was used in Qatar. We will still install two special cameras for the goal line, and then the VAR team will handle it.”
The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) chairman Erick Thohir made different responses about the use of VAR at the U-17 World Cup. He said that the authority lies with FIFA.
The 2023 U-17 World Cup is scheduled to take place from November 10 to December 2, 2023. The four stadiums that will host the international match are Jakarta International Stadium (JIS), Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium in Surabaya, Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in Bandung, and Manahan Stadium in Solo. For the group stage, the Indonesian U-17 national team will play three matches in Surabaya.
