TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Freeport Indonesia claimed to have reduced carbon emission production by 20 to 24 percent as of this year. President Director Tonny Wenas attributed this to the company's decision to change some of its operating methods, including changing fuels.

"This is our effort to contribute to reducing carbon emissions as recommended by the government," said Tonny at the 'Reducing Emissions in Indonesia's Mining Sector' event at the Kempinski Hotel in Jakarta, on September 26.

One of them is changing the mode of transporting copper ores, from using trucks to electric trains.

Tonny said Freeport used to transport copper ores from the mining area using 150 trucks to deliver some 300 tons of ores per day.

After using electric trains, the company can transport 110,000 tons of copper ore from the lower mine.

Freeport also uses alternative fuels to reduce carbon emissions, namely new fuels in the form of B30 (30 percent biodiesel and 70 percent diesel fuel), B40 (40 percent biodiesel and 60 percent diesel fuel), and B50 (50 percent biodiesel).

"This also helps us reduce carbon emissions from upstream and downstream activities," he said.

The company is now forming a special team to look for innovative new energy sources to replace fossils for use in mining production.

With these various efforts, Tony believes Freeport Indonesia can reduce carbon emissions by 60 percent in 2060.
