TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The head of Jakarta's Environmental Office Asep Kuswanto said that the emissions test ticket is one of the short-term solutions against air pollution. The Jakarta government in cooperation with Metro Jaya regional police is officially starting the implementation of emissions test tickets today.
"The implementation of emissions test ticket is one of the effective short-term solutions to reduce air pollution in Jakarta," said Asep when met on Friday, September 1, 2023.
For the past few weeks, the air quality in Jakarta and its surrounding areas has been deemed unhealthy. The provincial government is carrying out attempts to mitigate the effects of the pollution, such as emissions test tickets and taking action against stockpile companies dealing with coal.
During an exclusive interview with Tempo, Asep mentioned that his agency has been drafting a regulation concerning air pollution since 2005. The regulation provides articles on pollution control from mobile sources, stationary sources, and area sources.
The provincial government also issued Governor Instruction No.66 of 201 concerning air quality control. According to Asep, the regulation provided seven action plans against pollution, namely:
- Rejuvenation and emissions test on public transportation
- Applying odd-even traffic flow, congestion pricing, and parking tickets.
- Limiting the age of vehicles and applying emissions tests on private vehicles.
- Facilitating and boosting comfort for pedestrians.
- Industry control by supervising stationary emissions sources and conducting law enforcement.
- Planting trees by Climate Villages and greening public infrastructures and facilities.
- Renewable energy.
In addition, Governor Regulation No. 66 of 2020 on emissions tests has been issued to control emissions from mobile sources. The environmental office also drew up a grand design for air quality control last year.
The grand design is included as a long-term plan to improve Jakarta's air quality. The government will refer to the grand design while drafting the action plan and strategy to manage air pollution.
