TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) spokesperson Michael Sitanggang stated that the flood inundating Jalan HEK in East Jakarta on Monday morning, June 19, was caused by the overflow of the Baru River, instead of the collapsed embankment.

“The current conditions, it (the flood) has receded and traffic (roads) can be passed by vehicles,” Michael said via a text to Tempo on Monday, June 19, 2023.

Earlier, a broadcast message said that the embankment in HEK junction collapsed, flooding Jalan Raya Bogor up to Pasar Rebo and causing heavy congestion at the Pusdikes junction. It was also said that the embankment in front of the Kramat Jati Market collapsed, blocking the road.

In response, East Jakarta Mayor Muhammad Anwar said he was waiting for the Water Resources Agency to deal with the floods that submerged the road in front of the Transjakarta bus stop of Kramat Jati Market.

The floods paralyzed traffic from Pasar Rebo to Cililitan this morning. Anwar said he was aware of the impact. “We are waiting for the Water Resources Agency. [We are] informed that the budget for sheet pile will be allocated this year, [river] normalization will be made, it (the embankment wall) will be raised so it doesn't spill,” he said when met at the Jakarta City Hall.

He also said there will be a river channel to break up the flow of water to prevent it from overflowing and inundating the streets. He thus asked residents to understand the possible impacts of the construction project on the riverbank.
