Jokowi Summons Environment Minister Over Poor Air Quality

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo summoned Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya Bakar to the State Palace to discuss about the poor air quality in Jakarta.

Siti’s presence at the State Palace was confirmed by Presidential Secretariate Office’s spokesperson Bey Machmudin.

“It is confirmed. Concerning Siti Nurbaya who was summoned by the President to discuss the air pollution,” said the spokesperson in a written statement on Friday, June 16, 2023. However, the exact matter discussed remains unknown.

Based on IQAir data, Jakarta is ranked third on the list of cities with the worst air quality in the world, reaching an AQI US 141. This places Indonesia’s capital city third worst following Minneapolis, United States, in first place with AQI US 191, and Doha, Qatar, in second place with AQI US 149.

Meanwhile, Jakarta's current air quality rating is indicated with the color orange, which suggests that the air is unhealthy for sensitive groups.

Jakarta’s air quality is considered unhealthy that is based on the periodic air quality monitoring from the end of May up to June.
