TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian volcano, Child of Krakatoa or Anak Krakatau, on Friday, erupted and spewed a three-kilometer-high ash cloud, according to Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) report. The active volcano is located in the Sunda Strait in the Lampung Province.

Head of PVMBG Hendra Gunawan said the eruption took place specifically at 08:46 Indonesia Western Time (WIB) and no audible thumps were heard.

The eruption column reached a height that is believed to be 3,000 meters vertically upwards with winds blowing Southwest.

The eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 50 millimeters and a temporary duration of approximately 13 minutes and 22 seconds.

The nearest settlement is Sibesi Island, located 16.5 kilometers from Anak Krakatau Island. As of 10.00 WIB, the mountain was still emitting thick smoke with a height of approximately 50 to 300 meters.

The Child of Krakatoa alert status is currently at Level III and people are recommended to avoid conducting activities within a 5-kilometer radius of the volcano.
