Theys’ Death Stirs Up West Papuan’s Spirit of Struggle

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Tom Beanal, Vice Presidentof the Papuan Presidium, believes that the death ofPapuan Presidium’s President, Theys Hiyo Eluay, wouldnot discourage the Papuan from continuing with theirstruggle. On the contrary, he said the incident wouldfire up the struggle.
He said to Tempo News Room by phone today (12/11) thatthe Papuan Presidium would not stop their fight forfreedom because “it is not dependent upon one figurealone.” The Papuan Presidium, Beanal explained, hasbeen struggling for freedom only becaues it has thesupport of many people. Despite Theys' death, Papuanpeople would continue the struggle.
Beanal said he regretted Theys’ death and condemnedthose who had assassinated such a respected leader.Tom agreed that the incident must be related to apolitical agenda. When asked about the murderer,Beanal suspects the murderer or murderers came fromthe ranks of the Indonesian Military.
