TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno confirmed that the entrance fee for foreign tourists to the Borobudur Temple area will be higher compared to local tourists. The government is still discussing the ticket price.

"Yes [ticket prices for foreigners] are more expensive. But the services provided are of a higher quality," Sandiaga told reporters in Central Jakarta on Monday, May 8, 2023.

Sandiaga explained that foreign tourists visiting the Borobudur Temple area will receive complete facilities, including translators, tour guides, and explanations about the temple’s history.

Despite the ongoing discussion, Sandiaga said the Finance Ministry had finalized the land for the Borobudur Authority Board. However, he could not reveal the range of ticket prices to be applied.

Previously, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati set the entry fee for the Borobudur authoritative zone area, known as the Borobudur Highland, starting in May 2023 at Rp4,000-15,000 per person. This policy is contained in The Finance Minister’s Regulation Number 42 of 2023.

Acting director of the Borobudur Authority Executing Agency (BPOB) Agustin Warinangin said that Borobudur Highland is an authoritative zone covering an area of 309 hectares, or precisely the Menoreh hill area, Purworejo Regency.

The area is still being developed and there will be at least five zones, viz. the exclusive resort zone, the adventure tourism zone, the exotic tourism zone, the cultural tourism zone, and the entrance gate zone.

Agustin emphasized that the new rates announced by Sri Mulyani were not to enter the Borobudur Temple area. “That tariff applies to Indonesian tourists, while foreigners are subject to a maximum rate of up to 200 percent according to considerations,” Agustin said in Yogyakarta, Thursday, May 4, 2023.
