TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Cooperatives and SMEs Minister Teten Masduki made another comment on the ban against imported used clothes by assuring the public that the government will investigate to reveal the importers of second-hand clothing products which end up in Indonesia’s thrift shops.

"It's definitely being investigated up to the importers," said Teten to Tempo in South Jakarta on Tuesday, March 21, 2023.

Teten revealed that the import scheme is being investigated by the national police, the Trade Ministry, the Ministry of Industry, and the Customs and Excise Office. Teten also claimed that the President has personally warned him to reduce the flow of used clothes imports and give more market share to domestic products.

Minister Teten claimed that curbing the imports is needed to help save the national clothing industry, which includes MSMEs. Teten argued that the affordable prices of imported used clothes have disrupted the domestic textile industry.

Despite a ban that was introduced in 2015 on second-hand clothing product imports, Teten claimed that data shows that imports of such commodities have increased by 623 percent in 2022.
