TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Health Care and Social Security Agency (BPJS Kesehatan) claimed 252.17 million people, or 90.79 percent of the total population, are covered by the National Health Insurance-Indonesian Health Card (JKN-KIS) as of March 1, 2023.

In 22 provinces and 334 districts, the total universal health coverage (UHC) even reached 95 percent. “This makes JKN-KIS the largest health insurance in the world,” said BPJS Kesehatan Director Ali Ghufron Mukti at Balai Sudirman, Central Jakarta, Tuesday, March 14.

Based on the data presented, Indonesia ranks at the top, followed by South Korea, Japan, Costa Rica, Luxembourg, Austria, Belgium, and Germany. In addition, Ghufron said that the coverage of JKN-KIS is among the fastest, which can be achieved in just 10 years.

The financial condition of BPJS Kesehatan as the manager of JKN-KIS, he went on, is also healthy, which is evident from the absence of failure cases of claim payments to health facilities. In fact, said Ghufron, BPJS Kesehatan provided down payments for services to maintain hospitals’ cash flow.

“These hospitals are favored by BPJS (patients). BPJS does not have debt with hospitals, we have even raised rates at the hospital,” said Ghufron.

Furthermore, Ghufron claimed that 502.8 million people seek treatment using BPJS Kesehatan facilities throughout the year, or 1.4 million visits per day. He hoped that hospitals can provide comfortable, uncomplicated, and non-discriminatory services to BPJS Kesehatan patients.

BPJS Kesehatan is now striving to reach 98 percent coverage of JKN-KIS in 2024. This is in accordance with Presidential Instruction No. 1 of 2022 concerning the optimization of the national health insurance Program.
