TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned telecommunication company Telkom Indonesia is investigating the communication problem hampering the communication infrastructure over the Sarmi-Biak regions. As of Friday noon, March 10, 2023, Telkomsel operates services in the Sami-Biak region using the North Papua (Patara) submerged sea cable communication system (SKKL).

According to Agus Sugiarto, the Maluku and Papua Telkomsel general manager of regional network operations said the origins of the issue is detected at the Sarmi-Biak waters, which has hampered the duration of the fix.

"We are conducting preparations and follow-up identifications and also materials that will be brought for the repairs," said Sugiarto in Jayapura on Friday, March 10, Antaranews reported.

However, Sugiarto said that the company's experts believe that the issue in the telecommunication network is likely to be caused by a broken optical cable passing the region. "Due to its position that is submerged under the ocean, we will have to conduct checks. Recovering the network will need some time," Sugiarto explained.

Areas that were affected by this communication problem include Sarmi, Keerom, Jayapura Regency, and Jayapura City. Telkomsel believes the issue is purely accidental and that it is unrelated to political issues.
