TEMPO.CO , Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) on Thursday announced that a 5.6 magnitude earthquake jolted the Southern coastal region of West Sumatra’s Lengayang region. This quake struck at 06:05 Western Indonesia Time (WIB).
The agency’s data reveals that the quake’s epicenter was located at 1.69° S ; 100.70° E at the depth of 84 kilometers.
Subduction-related activities caused by an upward thrust fault are believed to be the main culprit.
Surrounding regions such as Padang, Padang Panjang, and the Southern Coastline felt the ground shake at the II-III on the MMI scale, which is analogized as feeling a truck passing by outside of one’s house. Fortunately, no tsunami warnings were triggered and no aftershocks were reported since.
