TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in a meeting between National Police (Polri) and Armed Forces (TNI) warned that law enforcement officers will be held responsible for future land and forest fires. The President’s warning comes as no surprise as he had said a similar statement in 2015.
“My warning 7 years ago still applies today. If there are massive fires in provincial regions, those held responsible will be the regional commanders or police chiefs. This still applies today,” said Jokowi following the meeting at Hotel Sultan on February 8.
The president warned the general public and governments in a number of provinces that are prone to land and forest fires as the country is entering a seasonal drought. He said the regions that must put a watchful eye on are Riau, North Sumatra, and several areas in Kalimantan.
At the National Coordination Meeting for Forest and Land Fire Control or Karhutla on Tuesday, 6 August 2019 at the State Palace, Central Jakarta, Jokowi regretted that the number of hotspots this year had increased compared to last year. He also reminded the participants that the rules of the game in overcoming land and forest fires were still the same as in previous years.
