TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Anak Krakatau in Lampung Province erupted on Tuesday night, January 24, 2023, at 21:13 local time, the Geological Agency of the Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Ministry confirmed. This is the third event throughout the day.

“The flames of fire are observed to be approximately 350 meters high,” said the agency in a statement on Tuesday.

The ash column was not visible during the eruption, but the agency only detected flames of fire emitted from the mountain’s top.

The first eruption took place at 18:50 local time and the second one occurred at 19:57 local time spewing red flames as high as 50-100 meters and an ash column reaching 300 meters high from the summit or 457 meters above sea level.

“The ash column was observed to be gray in a thick intensity leaning towards the east,” as reported in the statement.

It was also noted that based on the seismogram, the volcano eruption has a maximum amplitude of 55 millimeters and an initial duration of about 32 seconds.

The active volcano had previously erupted twice on Monday, January 23, 2023, at 04:42 and 06:07 local time. The Geological Agency maintained the volcano’s alert status at Level III or Siaga.

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) of the Geological Agency recommended people stay away from the summit of Mount Anak Krakatau within a radius of five kilometers.
