TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency's (BMKG) Maritime Meteorology Center warned of the potential for tidal floods in Indonesia's coastal areas. This is due to the super new moon phenomenon that coincides with the moon's perigee, which is when the moon's orbit is closest to earth, which will be on January 21.

The moon's short proximity to earth has the potential to increase sea level to a maximum.

"The potential for coastal flooding varies depending on the days and time in each region," BMKG's Maritime Meteorology Center head Eko Prasetyo said on Monday, January 16.

According to the water level monitoring data and tide forecasts, high-tide floods are likely to occur in the coasts of—among others—Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Lampung, Riau Islands, Bangka Belitung, the Jakarta north coast, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan , Maluku, as well as the north and south coasts of Papua.

"The public is advised to stay alert and prepared, to anticipate the impact of maximum tides and pay attention to maritime weather information updates," Eko said.
