TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Malaysia’s new Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim arrived in Indonesia on Sunday, January 8, 2023, for his first official visit since taking office at the end of November 2022. During his two-day visit, he has a mission to strengthen ties between the two countries.

“I hope this visit will be able to further strengthen the relationship between the two countries in addition to exploring new cooperation opportunities through discussions with [Indonesian] President Joko Widodo, InshaAllah,” Anwar tweeted on his social media on Sunday.

Accompanied by his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and a number of state officials, his flight landed at Terminal 3 of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport at 14:00 Jakarta time.

He was scheduled to hold a meeting with President Jokowi at the Bogor Palace on Monday, January 9. Various issues will be discussed, including economic cooperation and Malaysia's investment potential in Indonesia’s new capital Nusantara, land and sea borders, and the protection of Indonesian migrant workers.

The two leaders will also exchange views on regional and global developments, especially the situation in Myanmar and the handling of palm oil since both are the world's largest exporters.

During the visit, eight Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) between the Malaysian and Indonesian private sectors which were estimated to be worth RM1.16 billion or around Rp4.11 trillion will be inked.

In addition to the bilateral agenda, Anwar Ibrahim was scheduled to present a public lecture on "Malaysia-Indonesia Strategic Relations" on Monday and have a meeting session with the Malaysian diaspora in Jakarta on Sunday evening.
